Kerry McNabb
Kerry McNabb, often miscredited as Kerry McNab, was a recording engineer for Frank Zappa between 1972 and 1977, succeeding Dick Kunc.
Zappa
McNabb worked on Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo, Over-Nite Sensation, Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, Bongo Fury, Sleep Dirt and the Ruben And The Jets record For Real! (1973) and George Duke's Feel (1974).
McNabb provided vocal for Apostrophe ('). He can be seen in the Zappa movie Baby Snakes (The Film) during Baby Snakes Rehearsal, New York's Finest Crazy Persons. Zappa also mentions McNabb during Introucious on Road Tapes, Venue No. 2 and "Carved In The Rock" and Sunday Show 2 Start on The Roxy Performances.
McNabb is also credited as engineer on Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, The Lost Episodes and Läther and Trance-Fusion. He also worked on Roxy: The Movie (2015) and Cheaper Than Cheep (2025).
Later career
McNabb also worked with George Duke, who started calling him Mr. McFreeze because he (McNabb) liked the temperature at sub freezing levels in the studio. McNabb also worked as engineer on Johnny "Guitar" Watson's Ain't That a Bitch (1976) and Funk Beyond the Call of Duty (1977) and for Bobby Womack.
"I began working as Frank's recording engineer on January 3, 1975, when Kerry McNab (arguably the best engineer Frank ever had) began his slow withdrawal from the scene and subsequently from engineering entirely. Because of a contractual obligation to Kerry, Marty Perellis (Frank's then-manager) insisted on listing me as 'recordist' on the One Size Fits All LP, though I did much of the actual engineering. I went on to engineer all or part of six or so albums with Frank."
