The Magic Band was Captain Beefheart's backing band between 1966 and 1974, and reformed between 1978 and 1982 with a new line-up.

In 1969, Beefheart and his Magic Band recorded Trout Mask Replica in Zappa's studio in 7885 Woodrow Wilson Drive. When Zappa relaunched his Captain Beefheart vs. The Grunt People project in 1969, Magic Band members Mark Boston, Jeff Cotton, Bill Harkleroad and Victor Hayden were considered in side roles. However, after after Captain Beefheart and Zappa had a fall-out over the disappointing sales of Trout Mask Replica, the project never went into production. [1]
