Music of Bulgaria: Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic
Music of Bulgaria: Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic is a 1955 compilation album featuring Bulgarian folk music, performed by the State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances, conducted and arranged by Filip Kutev and released on the Nonesuch label. It was re-released in 1966. Four songs from this record would later be recompiled on Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (1975).
In his book Frank Zappa: A Biography, Barry Miles wrote that Music of Bulgaria was one of Zappa's favorite albums.[1]
Interviewed by Rob Fixmer for Bugle American (17 December 1975), Zappa said that, since he made his list of influences in the sleeve of Freak Out!, there were only a few more names that he would add nowadays, namely Krzysztof Penderecki, György Ligeti and Philip Koutev. In the same interview, he specifically referred to Koutev's albums released on the Nonesuch label. [2]
