Filip Kutev (anglicized in the West as Philip Koutev (June 13, 1903 - November 27, 1982) was a Bulgarian composer, conductor and arranger, best-known as the co-founder, along with his wife, of the State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances (1961) in the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Since his death, it has been renamed after him. He conducted the ensemble, which mostly performed folkloric music.

On the compilation album Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (Nonesuch, 1975), which introduced many people outside Bulgaria to Bulgarian folk music, four tracks were lifted from Kutev's earlier compilation album, Music of Bulgaria: Ensemble of the Bulgarian Republic (Nonesuch, 1966), which in itself was a reissue of Ensemble de la République Bulgare (1955). In his book Frank Zappa: A Biography, Barry Miles wrote that Music of Bulgaria was one of Zappa's favorite albums.[1] He was also a fan of Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares in general. [2] [3]

Interviewed by Rob Fixmer for Bugle American (17 December 1975), Zappa said that, since he made his list of influences in the sleeve of Freak Out!, there were only a few more names that he would add nowadays, namely Krzysztof Penderecki, György Ligeti and Philip Koutev. In the same interview, he specifically referred to Koutev's albums released on the Nonesuch label. [4]
