Matti Laipio
Matti Laipio (b. February 25, 1944) is a Finnish music journalist, and record producer. He worked as editor-in-chief for the music magazine Rytmi and has written numerous articles and books about jazz and blues music.
Frank Zappa
In 1971, Laipio became PR manager of the record company Scandia Music and met Frank Zappa during the concert in Stockholm, also interviewing him on the radio, alongside with Ilpo Saunio.[1] [2]
In September 1974, Zappa attended a wedding ceremony in Helsinki (for Christian von Alfthan and Eva Helkäma), where he first heard Satumaa (Finnish Tango) by Unto Mononen.[3] On 11 September 1973, Laipio interviewed Zappa on TV [4] and also wrote an article about him for the October issue of Intro. [5] Afterwards, Laipio asked Zappa to perform Satumaa (Finnish Tango) live in concert and gave him the score. Laipio served as the producer of the recording and also arranged a session drummer, Matti Koskiala, to help out. [6] [7] Satumaa (Finnish Tango) was performed on 22 September 1974 at the Kulttuuritalo concert hall in Helsinki and later released on You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2. Jukka Teittinen was the recording engineer, who also recorded the solo of Inca Roads for One Size Fits All. [8] Laipio is credited for his assistance in the liner notes of One Size Fits All. [9]
The same year, Laipio was also asked to arrange a recording studio, since Zappa wanted to perform with Finnish rock composer Pekka Pohjola, whom he greatly admired. However, eventually Pohjola rejected the offer. [10]
In 1976, Laipio visited Zappa in Los Angeles, at his home on Woodrow Wilson Drive. He met his family and also Eddie Jobson and Patrick O'Hearn. [11] In February 1977, Laipio wrote an article about Zappa for Shock Group. [12]
Laipio would visit Zappa again in 1989-1990 and in 1992. [13]
In 2020, he contributed the chapters about Zappa's concerts in Finland to the book Frank Zappa - The Nordic Stories.
