Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (born March 2, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York - October 27, 2013) was an American rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. Reed first found prominence as the guitarist and principal singer-songwriter of The Velvet Underground (1967-1971). He later started a solo career, of which the album Transformer (1972), produced by David Bowie, was his biggest success, spawning hits with Perfect Day, Satellite of Love and Take A Walk on the Wild Side. Reed was known for being an experimental artist, recording accessible albums like Berlin (1973) and New York (1989) and also highly polarizing records like Metal Machine Music (1975), which is an album featuring just feedback and distortion.
Reed collaborated with Don Cherry, Metallica and Gorillaz.
Lou Reed's partner was Laurie Anderson.
Frank Zappa and Lou Reed
In the late 1960s, Zappa was quite critical towards The Velvet Underground, spawning similar animosity from Lou Reed's side towards Frank Zappa.
The Zappa family has expressed animosity towards Reed describing him as "the world's biggest loser, the king of losers. He's commander of the losing side".
