B. Mitchel Reed
B. Mitchel Reed (June 10, 1926 - March 16, 1983) was an American radio DJ. He worked for various radio stations in New York and Los Angeles, presented Top 40 shows of singles and albums in the jazz and pop/rock hit parades. From the 1960s on, Reed also hosted alternative rock broadcasts at KFWB (at this occasion he also once played Frank Zappa's Status Back Baby[1], 1967-1968), KMET (FM) (1968-1970, 1972-1978) and at KLOS (1979-1982). Reed was notable for being a very fast but efficient speaker. Apart from presenting records, he also conducted interviews.
Frank Zappa
When The Black-Outs performed at the Seventh Annual Festival of Stars (22 June 1957) at the Shrine Exposition Hall in Los Angeles, B. Mitchel Reed, Hunter Hancock and Huggy Boy were reportedly interested in performing as MC's at the event. [2]
Frank Zappa named B. Mitchel Reed (misspelled as B. Mitchell Reed) in the list of influences in the sleeve of Freak Out! (1966), under the heading: "These People Have Contributed Materially In Many Ways To Make Our Music What It Is. Please Do Not Hold It Against Them". [3],
On May 19, 1981, Zappa was a guest in Reed's radio show's Rockline on KLOS-FM, Los Angeles. [4] A brief extract from their interview, on the subject of bootlegs, titled That Makes Me Mad, was used on the album As An Am. [5]
