In 1993 Zappa encouraged his wife to have nothing to do with the music business after his death. But with such a large body of work to oversee she established the Zappa Family Trust to manage the affairs of his estate for the benefit of his family in 2002.

Initially the trust was often seen as aggressive protectors of everything related to Frank Zappa. Amongst their legal challenges they sued the organisers of the Zappanale festival in 2008[1] but ultimately lost their case.

After the death of Gail Zappa in 2015 the management of the trust passed to Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa. This caused much friction with their siblings, particularly with Dweezil Zappa's usage of Zappa's material in his Zappa Plays Zappa shows.[2]

By 2018 the siblings had managed to establish a more conciliatory relationship.[3]

The trust continues to market merchandise attempting to profit from their father's life and work such as a Frank Zappa coloring Book[4]. The trust also runs a boutique record label called Vaulternative Records.
