Richard Emmet and Frank Zappa.

Richard Emmet was a copyist, transscriber and and assistant of Frank Zappa between 1978 and 1983. [1] He was also active as a guitarist [2] and composer. Emmet performed in various jazz orchestras and wrote music for TV shows like Sesame Street. [3]

Frank Zappa

Emmet was introduced to Frank Zappa in 1978, through David Ocker. He transcribed Zappa's music to musical scores, including for The Frank Zappa Guitar Book (1982). He invented an instrument that sounded like an ethereal tinkling sound, which Zappa used for Why Does It Hurt When I Pee on Joe's Garage (1979). Originally Zappa wanted to end Emmet's contract during the summer of 1982, since he no longer had something for him to do, but later he called him back, saying he felt bad that Emmet was now without a job right before his marriage and rehired him for another year, reassuring him that he would find something to do for him again. So Emmet stayed in business for Zappa up until 1983. [4]

In 1992, Emmet was interviewed by Matthew Galaher for Society Pages (The Magazine), No. 9, 1992. [5]

In 2003, Emmet wrote an article about his career with Zappa, My Time With Frank Zappa, by Richard Emmet.
