The red maroon sofa on the cover of One Size Fits All

Sofas and couches are part of Zappa's conceptual continuity. They are usually maroon and fly through the sky.

In the liner notes of The Legend Of Cleetus Awreetus-Awrightus & the Grand Wazoo, a maroon sofa is said to be standing in Uncle Meat's secret laboratory.

In Time Is Money from Zappa's Hunchentoot, Drakma sings about her "couch in the sky", which is a maroon sofa.

In the songs Divan: Once Upon A Time, Once Upon A Time and Sofa (Fire!) the universe is nothing but a fat, maroon sofa God decides to put a bit of flooring underneath it. This leads to the German lyrics: "Gib zu mir etwas Fußbodenbelag Unter diesen fetten, fließenden Sofa". When Zappa performed in The Netherlands or Flanders, Belgium, he translated this line in Dutch: "Geef mij wat vloerbedekking onder deze zwevende sofa" ("Give me some floor covering for under this floating sofa."). This line is also referenced in the dialogue Zappa wrote for Kamagurka's comic strip Zappa In Zoeloeland.
- In Sofa (Fire!), Divan, Magic Pig and Divan Ends Here, the story is mostly the same, only with God being accompanied by The Short Girl (named Wendell) and Squat, the Magic Pig. A sex scene occurs, with the line in German warning "Aber beklecker nicht das Sofa" ("Don't get no jizz upon that sofa").

- Andy mentions Hollwyood actor Andy Devine, but it has been suggested that his presence in the song is merely a pun on the word divan for sofa.
