Moon Unit Zappa (New York, September 28, 1967) is Zappa's oldest child and daughter. She is active as a singer, actress, writer and director.

Moon Unit is married to drummer Paul Doucette. Their daughter, Mathilda Plum Doucette, was born on December 21, 2004 (sharing the same birth date as Frank Zappa).

Contribution to FZ's works

As a 14-year old she contributed vocals to "Valley Girl" (she was credited for her improvised monologue) from "Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch" - the title was Moon's description of the image on the cover.

Moon was also a guest vocalist on the albums "You Are What You Is”, "Them Or Us" (on the track "Ya Hozna") and on "Frank Zappa Meets The Mothers Of Prevention". Appeared vocally on seven tracks of "Civilization Phaze III".

Other contributions

Moon also appeared in Dweezil's video "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama".

Moon, Kyle Richard and Lala Sloatman appeared in a failed pilot for a show ("Bunny Bunny Bunny") that FZ described in "Video From Hell" as "an Ionesco sort of post-punk sitcom".

Moon also created paintings for the Gabor Csupo/Bret Crain gallery inside the Lumpy Gravy restaurant in L.A.

Nicolas Slonimsky named his cat "Grody To The Max", based on a quote from Moon's lyrics to "Valley Girl".

Her own works

Her first article:
Confessions of a Metalhead - published in Harpers Bazaar, april '98.

Her book is called America the Beautiful (2001) - said to be "17% autobiographic"...

Notes

In the film "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" (1999) the character Dr Evil says: "The moon unit will be divided into two divisions: Moon Unit Alpha and Moon Unit Zappa."

"UNIT" is one of the stars in the "One Size Fits All" (1975) "universe".

She is mentioned in My Brother Is an Italian Mother (Jazz & Pop, 1968, C. R. Zappa), "performing body functions in time with the music".
