Matti Koskiala

Matti Koskiala (March 22, 1941 - July 22, 2025) was a Finnish jazz drummer, percussionist and music journalist. He had a specific interest in Brazilian music and wrote and made many documentaries about this topic. Koskiala also taught drumming at the Fazer Music School (1968-1972) and the Oulunkylä Pop and Jazz Institute. He was a session musician for various studio recordings and also played in local bands.

Frank Zappa

In the fall of 1974, Frank Zappa attended a wedding ceremony in Helsinki, on behalf of Christian von Alfthan and Eva Helkäma. Afterwards, Matti Laipio asked him to perform Satumaa (Finnish Tango) live in concert and gave Zappa the score. Since Chester Thompson had trouble mastering the melody, Laipio arranged Matti Koskiala to help him out on drums. [1] [2]
