Some of his best known tracks are "Cantaloupe Island", "Watermelon Man" (later performed by dozens of musicians, including bandleader Mongo Santamaría), "Maiden Voyage", "Chameleon", and the singles "I Thought It Was You" and "Rockit".

Zappa briefly quoted from Hancock's track "Chameleon" from his album "Head Hunters" (1973) in The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary, after Greggery notices that the cars that follow him are all inhabited by "slowly ageing, very hip, young people."
In 1987, Dweezil Zappa and Herbie Hancock played on the track Wipe Out on Hancock's album Hancock to the Beach. Vinnie Colaiuta was also once a drummer in Hancock's band.[1]
