Julius Fučik.

Julius Fučík (18 July 1872 - 15 September 1916) was a Czech composer and conductor of military bands. He is best remembered for his composition, "Entrance of the Gladiators" (1897), which is often used as circus music.

Zappa and Julius Fučik

Zappa quoted "Entry of the Gladiators" three times in his work: America Drinks, The Adventures Of Greggery Peccary and Rhymin' Man.

Den Simms:: And how 'bout that chromatic sounding circus melody which you used ...

Frank Zappa (FZ hums the melody). [13]

Den Simms:: Exactly.

Frank Zappa: I don't know what that's called, but it's like ...

Den Simms:: The famous ...

Frank Zappa: Yeah, that's The Circus Lick.

Den Simms: Exactly, but you don't know the name of it? 'Cause it's gotta have a title. It came from somewhere.

Frank Zappa:: I'm sure it does, but I don't know what it is.
