X-Legged Sally
X-Legged Sally was a Belgian avant-garde jazz, classical music and rock band, founded by Peter Vermeersch and Pierre Vervloesem. They were active between 1988 and 1997. Many of their performances are improvisations. Their earliest two albums, Slow-Up (1991) and Killed By Charity (1993) were produced by Bill Laswell. On their album Mountains Made Of Barking (1994), Mauro Pawlowski sings during the track Lulu.
X-Legged Sally is influenced by Frank Zappa. [1] On their album, Fired (1997), produced by Zjakki Willems, they covered City Of Tiny Lites. [2]
Vervloesem discovered Zappa in 1979 through Studio Tan and was thrilled that he didn't understand much of it, but admired his lack of musical compromises. He said that he is in touch with a member of Zappa's family, but isn't allowed to talk about certain subjects in the media. [3] Apart from Vervloesem, member Michel Mast is also a Zappa fan. [4]
When X-Legged Sally folded, Vervloesem established a new experimental band, The Flat Earth Society. On 21 March 2014, Peter Vermeersch played a musical homage to Zappa, performed with his group Flat Earth Society and Mauro Pawlowski and Pierre Vervloesem on electric guitar. [5] With Pawlowski, Vervloesem brought a homage to Zappa on the album Terms of Embarrassment (2016). [6]
