Michael Urso, aka Michael Erso, was the bassist for the "blue-eyed soul band" Rare Earth. He was hired by Zappa to temporarily replace Tom Fowler when he broke his arm in November of 1974. Urso was soon replaced by James Youman until Fowler healed enough to rejoin the band.

According to Cosmik Debris (The Book), Michael Erso, who replaced Tom Fowler and was replaced himself by James Youman during the tour in November 1974, was the lead guitarist and vocalist of Mannfred Mann's Earth Band, Mick Rogers.
