Catherine Milliken
Catherine Milliken (b. 1956) is an Australian composer, oboist and horn player. She is co-founder of the Ensemble Modern and has collaborated with composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Fred Frith, Steve Reich and Frank Zappa. [1] She is also active as a musical educator for the Berlin Philharmonic. [2]
Frank Zappa
In the early 1990s, Milliken played oboe, baritone oboe, English horn and didgeridoo for the Ensemble Modern during Frank Zappa's The Yellow Shark project. Her performances can be heard on the albums The Yellow Shark, Civilization Phaze III and EIHN (Everything Is Healing Nicely). [3]
During The Yellow Shark concert she played the didgeridoo with part of the instrument stuck in a bucket of water, making gurgling sounds that often made Zappa crack up with laughter. Interviewed by Don Menn and Matt Groening in The Mother Of All Interviews (Part 2) (1992), Zappa felt this was one of his better musical ideas. During a rehearsal of Master Ringo, she memorably also burst out in laughter: a moment caught on camera in the documentary AAFNRAA (broadcast on 17 September 1992 [4] ). The audio was released on the album EIHN (Everything Is Healing Nicely).
Catherine Milliken is mentioned and thanked in the liner notes of The MOFO Project/Object (Fazedooh) (2006) album. [5]
