Deep Purple are a British hard rock band who were one of the pioneers of heavy metal, along with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and who experienced their greatest success during the 1970s.

Wrote Smoke On The Water about the fire in Montreux as they were about to record an album.
The following week Zappa was injured at London's Rainbow Theatre which inspired Deep Purple to introduce performances of Smoke On The Water with the words "Break a leg Frank".
