According to page 101 of Mike Barnes' biography, "Captain Beefheart", Quartet Books, 2000 Zappa owned a record called "Blow Boys Blow" (1960) by Ewan MacColl and A.L. Lloyd. He once lent it to Captain Beefheart, who never gave it back and claimed it was his favorite record. In the liner notes of The Lost Episodes Zappa confessed his love for "sea shanties" and mentions he enjoyed listening to this album. Beefheart also defends himself, claiming that Zappa gave the record to him.

The sixth track on the album, The Handsome Cabin Boy, would later be requested by Zappa for radio play on KSAN, San Francisco.

Zappa's own recorded version from 1967 can be heard on The Lost Episodes.
