It featured The Beatles with a total new look and sound and made concept albums popular in rock music. The group members experimented with hidden messages, musical sounds, sound effects, an artistic album cover and new recording techniques. It became the soundtrack for the so-called "Summer Of Love" in 1967 and until this day is one of the best selling records of all time. Zappa's We're Only In It For The Money spoofs the cover of "Sgt. Pepper's". The Beatles' uniforms are replaced by dresses (referring to their group name The Mothers) and the plants are replaced by vegetables (referring to Call Any Vegetable). The cut-out characters and logos inside the sleeve of "Sgt. Pepper's" were spoofed in the sleeve of "We're Only In It For The Money" as well.

The album itself doesn't parody the music on Sgt. Pepper's directly, although some certain tracks are echoes of the original. For instance, What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body? and "What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body (reprise)" are similar to the song "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", which also has a reprise towards the end of the record.

Zappa had called McCartney by phone for permission to parody the cover, but this caused the album to be delayed for months due to legal complications. In the end the parody of the cover was featured inside the album sleeves instead as the main cover.
