Toshiro Mayuzumi (February 20, 1929 - April 10, 1997) was a Japanese composer who combined influences from traditional Japanese and Balinese music, Edgar Varèse, Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez and jazz with avant-garde techniques from electronic music and musique concrète. He composed music for several Japanese films and the biblical Hollywood epic The Bible: In the Beginning.... (1966), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award.
Frank Zappa
When Zappa visited Japan on 31 January 1976, he was asked during a press conference who his favorite classical composers were. Apart from Edgar Varèse, Igor Stravinsky, Krzysztof Penderecki and Tōru Takemitsu, he also said he had some scores by Mayuzumi.[1]
