Johann Strauss II or Johann Strauss, Jr. was an Austrian composer and conductor. He was the son of Johann Strauss Sr., a famous composer in his own right.
Johann Strauss II composed many waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, operettas and ballets, which are still frequently performed today. Among them are famous works like Tritsch-Tratsch Polka (1858), An der schönen blauen Donau (Blue Danube Waltz) (1867), Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald (Tales from the Vienna Woods) (1868), Die Fledermaus (The Bat) (1874), Rosen aus dem Süden (Roses From the South) (1880), Frülingsstimmen (Voices of Spring) (1882), Der Zigeunerbaron (The Gypsy Baron) (1885), Kaiser-Walzer (Emperor Waltz) (1889).
The Blue Danube Waltz was featured on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).
