Versions

In despite of different time sheets, my copies of Rykodisc RCD 10523 and VideoArts VACK 1222 are digitally (bit-to-bit) identical. Does anybody have information regarding the other CDs?

Zappa's use of Local or Intra-Continuity

Zappa's albums frequently have a sort of meta-theme at the album level. The circulation of the 'My Sharona' bass lick as a sub-theme on the 'Man From Utopia' album is an example, and 'Zoot Allures' also has a musical meta theme: the heat generated by frisson between swung vs. straight 8th notes. A lot of music is about this, of course - it's where blues and jazz and gospel and rock come from. But he does this consciously as a unifying theme. Every song has variations on that rhythmic theme. It's super obvious in 'Disco Boy' (the 'doodie' part) and 'Friendly Little Finger', but it's all over the album. Just a typical little bomb Zappa liked to hide in his work that pops out at you when you least expect it. It has been many years obviously since Frank passed, and I still notice new things like this. It's not my imagination - he put that stuff in there on purpose.Jonnybutter
