Talk:Matt Groening

Hi

Spotted this Matt Groening page is under 'M' (for Matt) not 'G' (for Groening) where it should be.

I suppose it can be corrected by going back in the 'differences' (to where it was initiated) and doing something like Categories:Supporting Cast|Groening, Matt ?... Not confident- you're the experts.

While on the subject of these entries: Is it OK to put in more than one entry, if the viewer is likely to look for more than one known name? e.g. There's already such an event for the same person, as in: Winged Eel Fingerling under 'W' and Eliot Ingber under 'I' (Haven't checked, but it's likely they were originally initiated as 2 separate pages/at different times- but I hope you see what I'm saying).

Allowing multiple entry at page initiation would, for example, provide a 'redirected' alpha-list for one person, as in:

(The Page Title)=Pamela Des Barres: under 'D' for Pamela Des Barres, under 'M' for Pamela Miller and also under 'M' for Miss Pamela.

(I looked in 'M' for Miss Mercy and found her in 'F' for Mercy Fontenot, which is cool- but do many viewers know her by that name? I know we can use searchbox, but will viewers have attention span/determination to proceed?)

This thought process started because I was going to put Wild Man Fischer in under 'W' but found he was in under 'F' for Larry Fischer. Again, would viewers be seeking this 'less popular' name? I'm aware this would swell the list, but I'm not suggesting it goes to the 'enth degree' with things like 'Don Vliet' & 'Donnie Vliet' etc, (where the searchbox is the solution) just any 'popular' titles applied with common sense. Subsequent to above, I've noted a contradiction (arguably) between Band member list & Supporting Cast list- the latter stating these are 'non-musical' contributors. That statement's fine; however some are musical contributors. Could I again suggest a list/s repeat so that one page list section is 'stand alone' in its 'mind set' to another? (For example) in Supporting Cast we would see Miss Christine (as a nanny†) and in Band members (as a musician†).
†(Both the same destination page of course!)

Furthermore, (using Miss Christine again as an example) I think the Band member list needs a sub-category- the Main Category being members of an Actual FZ line-up (On an FZ album or Tour), the sub-category being members/names of groups in which FZ was 'fringe' involved or 'sat in', i.e. GTO's, Lord Buckley, Juicy Lucy (for song cover), Miss Christine, etc -as opposed to 'they sat in his band'- (which would happen to include Miss Christine again)

Well spotted. Groening, Matt is now fixed. Yes you would have been right with your solution. Somewhere is an archive of an early wiki discussion about whether we should use first or last names for indexing. The wiki goes for first names (which I found quite bizarre but others thought was a good idea!) but we eventually discovered that we could force it to use proper last name indexing.
Yes when it is sensible to do so use a redirect from a less common name to a more common name page...
Putting
#redirect[[Common Name]]
on the page will send someone looking for the other name to the main article where a clear and concise explanation will be found.:
The Band Members category has been trimmed down once but probably needs a bit more and yes there is probably a need for another category somewhere between Band Member and Supporting Cast but we will get to that one day. Duncan 05:24, 31 May 2008 (PDT)
