J. James Exon
J. James Exon (August 9, 1921 - June 10, 2005) was an American businessman and governor of Nebraska (1971-1979) and senator of Nebraska (1979-1997). He was a member of the Democratic Party, but nevertheless conservative, opposing gay rights and the bill to establish a Martin Luther King Day. In the 1980s, he was a member of the PMRC to evoke censorship of music. In 1997, he and Slade Gorton also pushed the Communications Decency Act, in an attempt to censor obscenity on the Internet.
Frank Zappa
Frank Zappa sampled Exon's voice ("What is the reason for these hearings in front of the Commerce Committee?) on Porn Wars and Congress Shall Make No Law (The Track).
In The Real Frank Zappa Book, Zappa also wrote about when he attended the PMRC meetings:
"I testified before the Senate committee (...) one of the best lines of the afternoon came from Senator James Exon (D) of Nebraska -- not exactly a liberal guy -- who asked, "I wonder, Mr. Chairman, if we're not talking about federal regulation, and we're not talking about federal legislation, what is the reason for these hearings?" This received great applause, but was not carried by the network news. Exon also pointed out that these hearings were better attended, by audience and media (thirty-five TV feeds, fifty still photographers) than any other legislative procedure he had been involved in, including hearings on the budget and Star Wars."
