Gov't Mule
Gov't Mule is an American blues and southern rock group, founded in 1994, of which the three most permanent members are Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar), Allen Woody (bass) and Matt Abts (drums). Haynes and Woody had previously played with The Allman Brothers Band.
Frank Zappa
On their debut album, Gov't Mule (1995), their song Left Coast Groovies (For FZ) is a tribute to Frank Zappa. [1] The group has also covered Pygmy Twylyte on their fourth album Live... With A Little Help From Our Friends (1999). They also regularly cover Trouble Every Day live. [2]
Haynes saw Zappa at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, when he was a senior in high school. [3]
Warren Haynes, interviewed for Philzone.com (1999), said: "We all are huge Zappa fans but it’s hard for me to feel like, feel comfortable singing a Zappa tune. He had this comical talk singing voice, that’s why when we do Pygmy Twilight - it’s an instrumental because I just don’t have the courage to get up there and sing Frank Zappa lyrics and try to interpret them. I’m a soul singer, I’m not a comedian." [4] Interviewed by Chloe Richardson (16 April 2018), Haynes said that the last album he bought recently was "probably a Frank Zappa compilation." [5] Interviewed by Todd Beebe (22 July 2025), Haynes said his son was getting into Zappa, which he thought was very cool. [6]
