David McMacken
David McMacken (October 6, 1944 - November 4, 2019)[1] was an American painter, illustrator and album cover illustrator. He studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California (1967). He designed covers for The Beach Boys, Stan Kenton, Kansas (Leftoverture, 1976), Weather Report, Cat Stevens, Flo & Eddie (Moving Targets, 1976) and AC/DC (Ballbreaker, 1995). McMacken also made covers for video game box covers. He also worked for Playgirl and designed the film poster for Steven Spielberg's 1941.
Frank Zappa
In the early 1970s, McMacken met Cal Schenkel and made a "pulp-style" cover depicting Frank Zappa looming over the populace. This was reworked into the poster of 200 Motels (1971) and the soundtrack album, while the original pulp cover would later be used for Rare Meat - Early Works Of Frank Zappa (1983). [2]
McMacken also designed the cover of Over-Nite Sensation (1973). Zappa instructed him to paint in the realistic style of 17th-century Dutch Masters, with the objects in the painting to be portrayed as visual elements from the story. He worked two months on it, with Zappa adding more details, because "more is always better". [3]
He died in 2019 from cancer.
