? and the Mysterians (pronounced "Question Mark and the Mysterians") were an American rock band famous for the song "96 Tears" (1966).
Interviewed in 1969 by John Gilliland for Pop Chronicles, Frank Zappa said:
"I like 'Nighnty-six (sic) tears." ... I mean, I thought, listen! 'Ninety-six tears'! Wow! That's an art statement".[1]
The Mothers covered 96 Tears under the spoof title: Tiny Sick Tears.[1]
