Born Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman, Ornette Coleman (b. March 9, 1930 in Fort Worth, Texas - d. June 11, 2015 in New York City) was an American jazz saxophonist, composer and bandleader who innovated "free jazz" on the 1961 album of the same name.

Ornette and Zappa

Zappa and Don Van Vliet bonded over their mutual enjoyment of Coleman's music.

In Rolling Stone's review of Coleman's 1977 album Dancing In Your Head, critic John Swenson wrote, "Influences from Frank Zappa to James Brown filter through with the same attitude that these musicians use in their own traditional folk music."
