Nino Rota (December 3, 1911 - April 10, 1979) was an Italian composer, pianist and conductor. He is most famous as the writer of film soundtracks, most notably for director Federico Fellini. His melodies are catchy and eccentric, simultaneously adding to the strange and often disturbing atmosphere in Fellini's movies, like La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, Fellini Satyricon, Roma, Amarcord and Il Casanova di Fellini.
Rota also wrote the music for Francis Ford Coppola's epic gangster saga The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather II (1974). For the latter picture, he received an Academy Award.
Frank Zappa covered the theme music of The Godfather II during his 1988 tour.
