Mothra

"Mothra" (1961) is a Japanese monster movie about a gigantic moth who attacks Japan. The monster starred in many sequels and was eventually introduced in the Godzilla film series, where the insect is sometimes his friend, other times his foe.

In the 1960s films of Mothra, the monster is traditionally awoken by song, performed by two twin fairies, nicknamed the Shobijin (performed by the music duo The Peanuts). In an interesting side note, one of the twins, Emi, later married Kenji Sawada of the band The Tigers.

Frank Zappa

In Fifty-Four Fab, Boss Questions ... and The Fanzine Questionnaire, Zappa named "Mothra" one of his favorite films.

When Zappa visited Japan on 31 January 1976 and held a press conference, the audience was informed that he was a fan of the Godzilla and Mothra series and actually wanted to meet the actresses/singers who performed the twin fairies in the series. Roy Estrada also sung the Mothra theme song during the conference.
