References to the planet Mars in Zappa's work
- The Uncle Frankie Show: "And then, of course, we have I Was A Teen-age Martian. A small town boy reigns in terror over local residents who don't understand him. He falls in love with a plastic girl full of dynamite and computers that the high school metal shop teacher builds as a decoy. They get married and take off to Mars in his flying saucer and it blows up."
- Manx Needs Women: The title is a pun on the film Mars Needs Women.
- "The Finest Night Of The Year": "Okay. These are Martian flowers? Wonderful! Well, we'll put these over here, here's a guy who would look good with 'em. Let me introduce you to everybody."
Quote
Jan Donkers: "Your friend Captain Beefheart says he comes from Mars, where do you come from?"
Frank Zappa: "Well, I don't want you to hold it against me, but I come from the United States".
- Frank Zappa, Introducing...The Mothers, 1970.
