Mercedes McCambridge (March 16, 1916 - March 2, 2004) was an American stage and film actress. She initially worked in radio dramas and with Orson Welles' Mercury Theater Company. Her first film role, in All the King's Men (1949) won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She played side roles in classics like Johnny Guitar (1954, which gave Johnny "Guitar" Watson his stage name), Giant (1956) (with James Dean) and Suddenly, Last Summer (1959).
In 1965, she starred in Run Home Slow (1965), produced and directed by Tim Sullivan, score by Frank Zappa). Her final major Hollywood role was the, uncredited, voice-over for the demon child in The Exorcist (1973).
