In the late fifties, Ronnie Williams started a band called The Blackouts. The original members were:
- Ronnie Williams - guitar
- Wayne Lyles - vocals
- Terry Wimberly - piano
- Johnny Franklin - bass, sax
- Carter Franklin - ?
- Ernie Thomas - trumpet
- Frank Zappa - drums
In 1961, the band consisted of:
- Ronnie Williams - guitar
- Frank Zappa - guitar, percussion
- Dwight Bement - sax
- Joe Perrino - piano
- Al Sarratt - drums
- Rex Jakobowski - guitar, vocals, harmonica
