Thomas Paine (1737-1809), who is widely recognized as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, is quoted in The Real Frank Zappa Book (1989): "I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish church, by the Roman church, by the Greek church, by the Turkish church, by the Protestant church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church."

A radical pamphleteer, anticipated and helped foment the American Revolution through his powerful writings, most notably "Common Sense", an incendiary tract advocating independence from Great Britain. An advocate for liberalism and constitutional republican government.
