Alex Winter (London, England, July 17, 1965) is a British-American actor and film director. He is most famous as Bill in the 1989 comedy film "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure". As director he is responsible for the comedy films "Freaked" (1993) and "Smosh: The Movie" (2015), the documentaries "Downloaded" (2012) and "Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and the Silk Road" (2015) and the 1999 psychological thriller "Fever".
In July 2015 Winter began work on a biographical documentary about Frank Zappa, named Who the F*@% is Frank Zappa?. Winter explained he was captivated by Zappa's "wit, politics and wild imagination" before being drawn by the genius of his music. "I have always been drawn to telling the stories of great, challenging Americans. These are people who changed the world around them without being easily defined or constrained; people who break the rules with purpose, ideology and vision; people like Frank." The documentary is made with full support of the Zappa Family Trust and Winter will have access to all content of The Vault, though Winter has complete editorial freedom . To fund his project and the necessary categorisation, digitalisation and preservation of all audio and video footage in the archives he started a kickstarter project in March 2016.
Winter has also mentioned using Zappa Wiki Jawaka as a source: "This isn't my own research — all these great quotes from Nando are from off the extremely robust Zappa Wiki Jawaka, which I thoroughly enjoy."
