==Background Information==
Over-Nite Sensation is an album by Frank Zappa, released in 1973. It was recorded in March – June 1973 at these studios: Bolic Sound in Inglewood, Whitney, in Glendale, and Paramount in Los Angeles. The album was released in both the 2-channel stereo and 4-channel quadraphonic formats.

The album is considered a turning point in Zappa's career, since its approach to music is very different from what he had done before. It was a more accessible sound - his first album to go gold - with a series of relatively straightforward songs, though not without Zappa's typical musical challenges. Zappa manages to craft in 3-to-6-minute structures complicated progressive jazz-rock arrangements, as well as some funk and other styles. The lyrics tend toward parody, being either about sex ("Dirty Love", "Camarillo Brillo", "Zomby Woof" and the paradigmatic example of "Dinah-Moe Humm") or social commentary ("I'm the Slime", a bash on TV programming) and others ("Fifty-Fifty", "Montana").

Over-Nite Sensation and the following album Apostrophe ('), recorded with the same group of musicians, are the subject of a Classic Albums series documentary from Eagle Rock Entertainment, released on DVD May 1, 2007.

Dave McMacken on the cover art content and concept:
 +

 +
"I listened to a truly bizarre take of the scene that Zappa imagined. In fantastic detail, he proceeded to tell me the story of Over-Nite Sensation and that the cover painting was to be done in a formal, realistic "Dutch Master" style, with the objects in the painting to be portrayed as visual elements from the story.

 +
The painting captures a moment in the life of a band roadie on tour, with "Over-Nite Sensation" being a reference to the horniness of bands on the road. The space we're looking at is in a true perspective, but they're in a mirror and the object on the viewer's side are in reverse. Our focal object is a grapefruit, the symbol of a sexual object, and the grapefruit's been penetrated, with "cum" oozing out of it. The fire extinguisher symbolizes the completion of the act of intercourse, and even the frame is a sexual fantasy, starting off in gold and going to rot. All of the other items - the Holiday Inn, the food, maps and oozing TV - represent the doldrums of being on the road." <ref>http://rockpopgallery.typepad.com/rockpop_gallery_news/2010/04/uncovered-interview-overnite-sensation-by-dave-mcmacken.html</ref>

On the far right of the larger canvas of the 200 Motels (triptych)<ref>http://www.ratzandcompany.com/shop-online-1/frank-zappas-200-motels-triptych</ref> by Dave McMacken there is a floating disembodied hand apparently pointing at Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler in bondage gear, he later re-used a similar disembodied hand motif on the Overnite Sensation sleeve <ref>http://www.ratzandcompany.com/shop-online-1/copy-of-frank-zappas-200-motels-2</ref>.

Liner Notes

Background Information

Dave McMacken on the cover art content and concept:

"I listened to a truly bizarre take of the scene that Zappa imagined. In fantastic detail, he proceeded to tell me the story of Over-Nite Sensation and that the cover painting was to be done in a formal, realistic "Dutch Master" style, with the objects in the painting to be portrayed as visual elements from the story.

All of the other items - the Holiday Inn, the food, maps and oozing TV - represent the doldrums of being on the road." [1]

Conceptual Continuity

On the far right of the larger canvas of the 200 Motels (triptych)[2] by Dave McMacken there is a floating disembodied hand apparently pointing at Jesus Christ and Adolf Hitler in bondage gear, he later re-used a similar disembodied hand motif on the Overnite Sensation sleeve [3].
