Merzbow is the main recording name of Japanese noise rock artist Masami Akita (秋田 昌美, Akita Masami?).

In an interview with Overcome Records Masami Akita named Zappa as one of his influences. "I was influenced by Pierre Henry/Pierre Scheffer's "A Symphony For A Lonely Man", "The Chrome Plated Megaphone Of Destiny" from Mothers Of Invention's album "We're Only In It For The Money", all songs in Frank Zappa's album "Lumpy Gravy", and Iannis Xenakis's "Persepolis". My initial idea was to compose this kind of music in more "punk rock" style."

According to an article on Answers.com Akita looked for surrealistic musicians in his formal years. The only ones he found that he considered genuine were Pierre Boulez and Frank Zappa, but they were too musical for his taste.
