Medium Cool (1969) is a American political drama film written and directed by Haskell Wexler and starring Robert Forster, Verna Bloom, Peter Bonerz, Marianna Hill and Harold Blankenship.
Plot
It takes place in Chicago in the summer of 1968 and consists of a series of individual vignettes which feature semi-documentary footage and acted scenes. The film tries to create the mood of America at the end of the late 1960s by focusing on youth demonstrations, journalism, social activism, free love, riots, anti-war protests and the Democratic National Convention.
Significance
"Medium Cool" was notable for Wexler's use of cinema vérité-style documentary filmmaking techniques, as well as for combining fictional and non-fictional content. In 2003, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
Soundtrack
The soundtrack consists of music by Mike Bloomfield, Love (The Band) and The Mothers of Invention. Among the songs that can be heard are: Oh No, Are You Hung Up?, The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet,Who Needs The Peace Corps? and Mom & Dad. The song Merry-Go-Round by Wild Man Fischer can be heard as well.
