Robert "Bobby" Martin, the son of two opera singers from Philadelphia, is a conservatory-trained french horn player, a gifted athlete, and he sports a genius IQ. Bobby taught himself to play piano and all the brass instruments in elementary school; he learned all the reed instruments shortly thereafter. Although he had attracted the attention of professional baseball scouts as an all-star shortstop, he decided to pursue a career in music.

In the late 70's, Martin recorded and toured with the Pop Group "Orleans", before joining The Mothers in the summer of 1981. Bobby provided keyboards, sax, harmonica, and/or vocal for Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch, The Man From Utopia, Them Or Us, Thing-Fish, Frank Zappa Meets The Mothers Of Prevention, Does Humor Belong In Music?, Jazz From Hell, Guitar, You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 1, Broadway The Hard Way, You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 3, The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Make A Jazz Noise Here, You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 4, You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 5, and You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 6; also for the Beat The Boots series disk As An Am (BTB) and the unreleased Trance-Fusion.

Martin's performance can be seen in the Zappa movies Dub Room Special, Does Humor Belong In Music?, & Video From Hell.

Bobby Martin is a band member of The Band From Utopia.
