Telefunken U-47 was a brand of microphones, produced by Telefunken.

Frank Zappa noted the phallic shape of Telefunken U-47 and referenced this in two songs from Joe's Garage:

• • Crew Slut: "It looks just like a Telefunken U-47."
  • Sy Borg: "You'll love it. It looks just like a Telefunken U-47".

Interviewed by Chris Michie in You Call That Music? (The Article) (February 2003), Dweezil Zappa talks about the musical equipment in Zappa's studio: "There's a nice collection of Neumanns: some M49s, some M50s, some U47s. I believe there's one Telefunken U-47."
