'The Coasters were an American rock and roll/doowop band who scored several hits, written by Leiber and Stoller: Dowin in Mexico (1956), Searchin (1957), Yakety Yak (1958), Charlie Brown (1959), Along Came Jones (1959) and Poison Ivy (1959). The group was also known for their humorous approach. [1] Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo wop legacy through the 1960s.
The group is referenced in Zappa's Status Back Baby: "The other night we painted posters and played some records by The Coasters."
