Dave was the sax player for [[The Soul Giants]], with [[Roy Estrada]], [[Jimmy Carl Black]], Ray Hunt (guitar), and [[Ray Collins]]. Ray Hunt left the band and Collins brought in Frank as a possible replacement. Coronado left the band as well, as FZ explained it, "davy knew the truth that if you play original material you cannot work in a bar. He was afraid of being out of work, so he quit the band; and he was right, we couldn't get a fucking job anyplace." After Dave left, FZ assumed leadership of the band, changing their name to The Blackouts, Captain Glasspack and the Magic Mufflers, and - eventually - The Mothers.
