Richard Rodgers (June 28, 1902 - December 30, 1979) and Oscar Hammerstein (July 12, 1895 - August 23, 1960) were a celebrated American songwriter-composer duo.
Earlier in his career, Rodgers worked together with Lorenz Hart. Together they wrote many songs for Broadway musical and Hollywood film adaptations, several of which have become standards: Dancing on the Ceiling (1930), Isn't It Romantic? (1932), Blue Moon (1934), The Most Beautiful Girl in the World (1935), My Funny Valentine (1937), The Lady Is a Tramp (1937) and Have You Met Miss Jones? (1937).
Hammerstein worked with various other composers, including Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg. With Kern, he wrote the musical Show Boat (1927), with the standard Ol' Man River.
With Oscar Hammerstein, Rodgers wrote music for Broadway musicals later adapted into Hollywood movies like Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959). Several songs by Rodgers and Hammerstein have become standards: People Will Say We're in Love (1943), The Surrey with the Fringe on Top (1943), Oklahoma (1943), You'll Never Walk Alone (1945), Some Enchanted Evening (1949), Bali Ha'i (1949), I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair (1949), I Whistle A Happy Tune (1951), Getting To Know You (1951), Hello Young Lovers (1951), Shall We Dance (1951), The Sound of Music, Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, The Lonely Goatherd and My Favorite Things (1959).
