Ronald Reagan strategic space missile defense plan, nicknamed "Star Wars" after the famous film, was introduced in 1983. Reagan wanted to create a defense system so that the United States could be defended in space against possible Soviet attacks. Even though the plan was never realized it scared Russia enough to try to change Reagan's ideas about the plan.
Zappa was very critical of this defense system and claimed that it was unrealistic and would be useless in case of germ attacks. He later wrote a song about it: Star Wars Won't Work.
