Paul Twitchell (1908-1971) was an American spiritual writer and founder of the religious movement Eckankar.
The epigraphs at the heads of chapters (publishers love those little things) were researched and inserted by Peter Occhiogrosso -- I mention this because I wouldn't want anybody to think I sat around reading Flaubert, Twitchell and Shakespeare all day.
Twitchell epigraph quote:
As you grow older in your observation of the peoples of this Earth world, it becomes more
noticeable that stupidity is the reigning virtue. The masses are always willing that somebody
take the responsibility of caring for them.
