Mark E. Smith

The Fall was a British post-punk rock band, active between 1976 and 2018, led by front singer Mark E. Smith. They had an experimental sound and lyrics that were sometimes surreal, inspired by literature and involved biting political satire.

Mark E. Smith was a huge fan of Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. He named We're Only In It For The Money one of his favorite albums: "I just think it’s one of the funniest records I’ve heard," he says. "I like Freak Out! too, that still sounds great, really powerful, but 'We’re Only In It For The Money' is so relevant to the Manchester scene today, it’s unbelievable. Like, I walk down Whitworth Street and someone comes up and says, Mark Smith, you created this scene, where can I get some E? Or pot? Ha ha! I say, I don’t bloody know! He says, Well, me and the guys came down in a van from Wales to get the scene, but they won’t let us in The Hacienda! And they’ve got the Beloved/Soup Dragons centre-parting, and they’re asking about drugs. It’s just like 'We’re Only In It For The Money'!" [1]

The Fall often covered Hungry Freaks, Daddy.[2] In 1995, they also released a cover of I'm Not Satisfied as a single. [3]

Mark E. Smith and guitarist Craig Scanlon also wrote the tribute song I'm Frank (1990). [4] The song Psykick Dance Hall was inspired by Call Any Vegetable.[5]
