The Pop Chronicles was a radio documentary on the history of popular music. It focused on music popular in America in the 1950s and 1960s. It was written, hosted, and narrated by John Gilliland (1935-1998).[1] It first aired in 1969.[2][3][4]

Gilliland interviewed Frank Zappa for the documentary on March 5, 1969 in Glendale, California.[5][6] This was after the series had begun airing[3] and appears to be 4 days before parts of this interview first aired.[2] Zappa rerecorded parts of an earlier interview because of technical difficulties with its original recording[7] on December 8, 1967.[8] The show included Zappa reading from his article "The Oracle Has It All Psyched Out" about the film Blackboard Jungle.[5][9] The entire Pop Chronicles interview has been provided by the John Gilliland Collection at the University of North Texas.[10]

Zappa appears in shows 5, 8, 11, 14, 20, 34, 43, 54, and 55.[6][11]
