== Major release ==

The ''major'' number is increased in the case of significant differences in:
* the music (score, notes/chords, solos, heavy remixes/remasters, overdubs, censorship , etc.)

The numbering usually begins with:
* 0 which stands for the demo pressing or sample edition (only in the case of noticeable differences)
* 1 which stands for the first released commercial edition (the vinyl version in most of the cases until the end of the "vinyl era")

Examples:
*Hot Rats version 1 = Original stereo (vinyl), version 2 = Heavy remix with a lot of overdubs (CD)
*Lumpy Gravy version 0 = Demo (acetate), ...

== Minor release ==

The ''minor'' number (optional) is increased in the case of significant differences in:
* the sound quality (except when only due to transfer on a specific medium such as [[Wikipedia:Minidisc|Minidisc]]/[[Wikipedia:Compact audio cassette|Cassette]]/[[Wikipedia:Lossy data compression|lossy compression formats]])
* the number of channels (mono, stereo, quad, 5.1, etc.)
* a very few tracks/songs (missing/bonus/remixed/altered/censored/different in any way)

The numbering usually begins with both 1 and 2.
0 is not used if there is only one version in the major release.

Examples:
*Freak Out! version 1.1 = Original stereo (vinyl), 1.2 = Original mono (vinyl), 1.3 = Shortened mono (single vinyl), 2 = Remix (CD)
*Apostrophe(') version 1.1 = Original stereo (vinyl), 1.2 = Original quad (CD-4 LP and Quad-8 tape)

== Revision ==

The ''revision'' lower case letter (optional) is increased (in the alphabetic order) in the case of very subtle variations that are difficult or almost impossible to hear.

The 'numbering' usually begins with both a and b.

Example:
*The JP and the US/EU Mystery Disc CDs have a different gain (JP is around 5% higher). So small remastering nuances could be numbered like 1.2a & 1.2b...
