'''Primus''' is an American alternative rock band, active since 1984. Larry LaLonde (vocals, guitar), Les Claypool (vocals, bass) and John Hoffman (drums) have been the most consistent members. Their quirky, sometimes funky sound allowed them chart success in the regular hit parade too.

Primus additionally wrote the theme music for the animated TV series ''South Park''.

==Frank Zappa==

Members Larry LaLonde and Les Claypool are both huge Zappa fans.
Lalonde once said: ''"Frank Zappa taught me that rock and roll doesn't have to suck."'' <ref>http://www.tangento.net/zappa2.html</ref>. Lalonde wanted Primus to be a cross between Zappa and [[wikipedia:Dead Kennedys|Dead Kennedys]] and that he thought Zappa was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived: "My favorite guitar player ever is Frank Zappa. When I think of what makes a good guitar solo, Zappa's playing is the thing I think of. Les Claypool commented on Zappa: ''"I really appreciate anybody who has any type of signature, whether it’s a guitar player or somebody who makes pancakes. It’s so rare to have your thumbprint really stand out from the rest of the bunch. He was a fellow who challenged himself and did what he needed to remain interested in making music and creating. I think that’s very bold because when most people find their comfort zone, they stick with it. He’s a shining example for guys like myself to take chances, and not be afraid to take those chances. His humor was amazing—-"[[Dumb All Over]]" is still incredibly timely. It’s almost scary. He knew how to hit the nail on the head and still have it tickle your funny bone or bring forth this odd imagery that would border on silly.
